Press release -

The place for plastic and polymer innovations

New natural materials, climate-smart packaging and a carbon fibre car that runs on solar energy. Elmia Polymer, Scandinavia’s biggest dedicated fair for the plastics and rubber industry, presents all the latest innovations and trends. Inspiration and innovation join forces to create new opportunities and business deals.

“The exhibitors have a fantastic breadth that represents the industry in a splendid way,” says Tanja Lundberg, Business Manager Elmia Polymer. “The fair is also an important forum for discussing key issues related to the industry’s competitiveness and promoting Sweden’s ability to hold its own in the global arena.”

Carbon fibre car with no air resistance

New inspirational solutions and the materials of tomorrow are important features of Elmia Polymer. Design and construction are fundamental to future business deals. At PlasTactic, the fair’s inspirational forum, visitors can see many of the new materials that are strongly on the rise and are opening up new business opportunities. One major focus is bioplastics made of biological raw materials such as various plants, oyster shells etc. The new materials have unique properties that play important roles in recycling, composting and a good future environment.

PlasTactic will also unveil a solar cell car made of natural fibre-reinforced fibre, a material that combines low weight with a strong and stable construction. The car is powered by solar energy and constructed so that it can offer a fast, stable driving experience with minimal energy loss and almost no air resistance. This summer the finished car will be shipped to Australia to participate in a competition to drive across Australia in the shortest time possible.

Four themes

This year Elmia Polymer focuses on four particular themes: production, automation, construction and generation. Under each heading are activities and lectures focusing on know-how and the latest developments in every theme. A number of the almost 130 exhibitors are also demonstrating their machines in operation – a feature that is unique to Elmia Polymer.

One of the topics addressed under the theme of generation is how the industry can find manpower and be able to continue being strong in future. Rejuvenation and recruitment are essential, which is why students from Lund University and KTH in Stockholm have been specially invited to the fair. At Elmia Polymer they can find thesis projects, internships, sponsors and contacts for the future.

“Skills supply to the industry is a very important issue which it is time to deal with,” Lundberg explains. “It is also at the industry’s request that we have invited the students and created a forum where we can help to match up students and companies.”
