Who’s the world’s best forwarder operator?

For anyone who wants to experience steel nerves, quick decisions and powerful machines, one hot tip is the stand of the Swedish Association of Forestry Contractors at Elmia Wood.

“During the fair we’re holding the Swedish School Forwarder Championships, the Swedish Forwarder Championships and the Forwarder World Cup. There’s going to be a lot of action!” promises Karl-Magnus Hembjer of the association.

Entrants from eleven countries are currently registered for the world championship, the Forwarder World Cup.

“It’s a high-speed competition with the entrants competing against each other simultaneously on two parallel courses,” Hembjer explains. “First they have to load logs – some fairly easy and others placed under various types of obstacles. If they miss any, they have to load extra penalty logs.”

The competitors then have to build a freestanding tower out of blocks of wood.

“The blocks have to be stacked as quickly and sturdily as possible,” Hembjer says. “This element usually involves great action when the operator who is lagging behind must try to catch up by taking extra risks.”

Prestige plus 1,500 Euro

Before reaching the finish line, operators face yet another challenge, when the first person to pick up a specially marked log wins.

“The competitions demonstrate speed, precision and safety thinking and are a good way to create interest in the job of a forwarder operator,” Hembjer says. “We want to present the forest as an attractive workplace. The broad range of visitors who come to Elmia Wood means that we come into contact with the forwarder operators of the future.”

Is there a favourite to become world champion?

“One name to watch is Sweden’s Martin Svensson, who’s won the World Cup before, but it’s always very close-run and exciting so there should be many possible winners,” Hembjer says.

As well as the honour of being the world’s number one, the winner of the Forwarder World Cup also receives 1,500 Euro.

The Swedish Forwarder Championships and the Swedish School Forwarder Championships

As well as the Forwarder World Cup, the Swedish Forwarder Championships and the Swedish School Forwarder Championships will also be held during Elmia Wood. The competitions are run on two parallel courses and two different types of machine are used. The qualifying heats are held first, followed by the semi-finals and then the decisive final heat.

The X-CUT – a global premiere from Husqvarna

For many people a chain will be the most important new product at Elmia Wood. Specifically, the newly developed X-CUT saw chain from Husqvarna. The Husqvarna X-CUT SP33G was presented last autumn in some markets, including Sweden. But everyone else will see it for the first time at the world’s largest forestry fair and Husqvarna is preparing for many questions.

New section at Elmia Wood: The time is right for using drones in forestry

At this year’s Elmia Wood on 7 to 10 June the unmanned aerial vehicles will have their own separate section called the Drone Zone. The fair is collaborating with UAS Forum Sweden, which arranges Sweden’s leading conference in the field, and which is assembling experts and suppliers for the fair.

The new Load & Transport section includes everything to do with raw material logistics from the forest to industry.

Three new sections at the world's biggest forestry fair

Four months before Elmia Wood opens, the organisers confirm it will be the world’s biggest forestry fair ever. “By January we’d already sold more stand space than at the previous Elmia Wood in 2013,” says Exhibition Manager Jakob Hirsmark.

The MAN TGS looks like an ordinary logging truck but has hydrostatic drive on the front wheels and a tag axle with steerable wheels.

Premiere for MAN’s logging trucks at Elmia Wood’s new exhibition area

The German truck manufacturer MAN sees Europe’s forestry sector as an increasingly important market. That’s why the company is exhibiting at the world-leading forestry fair Elmia Wood 2017 in the new Load & Transport area, which brings together everything to do with logistics en route from the forest to the industrial consumers.

Komatsu Forest is planning to present several new products at Elmia Wood. Exactly which ones will only be revealed at the fair. “We’re coming with a new machine, harvester head innovations and some new technical solutions,” says Annelie Persson, communications manager at Komatsu Forest.

At the tip of the crane is a world first – crane-tip control for harvesters. It can be tested at Elmia Wood mounted on a John Deere 1270.

John Deere presents crane-tip control for harvesters

John Deere is launching a longed-for global first at Elmia Wood. The company has now developed its crane-tip control for harvesters too. There will also be the opportunity to test operate several forest machines plus do tests on simulators at the John Deere stand. “Visitors can try out the new technology during the fair,” says Dieter Reinisch of John Deere.

The new Rottne H8D is having its world premiere at Elmia Wood. An innovative powertrain system lowers fuel consumption and reduces ground damage.

World premiere for a new harvester from Rottne

Rottne is having its world premiere at Elmia Wood for a totally new harvester – one so much in demand that it already has several orders before it’s even been unveiled. Called the H8D, the harvester has an innovative and newly developed powertrain. The result is lower fuel consumption and considerably less ground damage.

Hypro found markets in 32 countries via Elmia Wood

After an accident in the forest, Tommy Karlsson had the time to create something that would reduce the risk of future accidents: a hydraulic processor for tractors. Now known as Hypro, the product is available in 32 countries.
